Meet The Team: Douglas Lavigne

October 19, 2022

Douglas joined B Capital as part of the Business Intelligence team building data infrastructure, pipelines and dashboards to support the firm make informed business decisions.

1. What do you focus on at B Capital?

At B Capital, I am part of the Business Intelligence team where I utilize data to support the firm make more informed business decisions. Right now, in addition to building the data infrastructure and pipelines, I am working on creating dashboards to help B Capital benchmark our portfolio’s performance.

2. What attracted you to working at B Capital?

I have a keen interest in analytics in the financial services industry and the opportunity to apply data analytics in venture capital investing sounded very interesting to me. What’s more, I really liked the fact that I could see B Capital’s values and principles in its people. This was something that attracted me to want to be a part of the team. It really showed me that B Capital has amazing people and leadership in place. I felt I had come across something special.

3. If you weren’t in this career, what would you be doing?

I might have pursued my childhood dream of becoming a pilot. When I was young, I looked to the skies with great admiration every time a fighter jet would fly by, listening to the roar that echoes long after it has flown out of sight. I would imagine how amazing it must have been to be in something so powerful yet feel so free in the skies above.

4. How have you seen technology innovation impact your function or field?

In the last decade or so, technological advances to store and process big data has shifted from on-premises to cloud computing. The focus on open-source software and scripting languages shifted from managing big data to restructuring big data for statistical analyses. All of which allows enterprises to have access to vast amounts of computing power for a much lower cost, enabling even the smaller enterprises to have access to analytical tools for their businesses. With companies realizing that analytics is critical for business success, data and analytics is now more of a necessity than a nice-to-have.

5. What’s something people may not know about you?

Since I was young, I have been afraid of dogs. I’ve had a few instances where I was chased by dogs, which resulted in my fear. But as fate would have it, a couple of years back, a friend of mine invited me over after her dog gave birth to a litter of puppies. She asked if I would like to bring one home. My heart melted after seeing all the puppies. So yes, I brought a puppy home. Meet Romeo, he has been the one helping me to overcome my fears with each passing day that he has been in my life.
